Guide to teen movies 101:
Step 1. Create a character.
Step 2. Create another character. Better to be the opposite gender to originate Romantik.
Step 3. Give one protagonist a quirky hobby few people know about or knowledge like 10 random facts.
Step 4. Give another protagonist a trauma, a tragic story so he or she is mysterious and a loner.
Step 5. Add some friends to not-so depressed protagonist, which, despite being the same teenagers, have their shit together. Throw some representation in the background like lgbtq+ or people of colour but don't go overboard!
Step 6. To connect two main characters give them physical things (letters, books, good or bad luck charms) so they can play with it…

Soft boys, assemble! The ultra-sensitive high school melodrama you’ve been waiting for since February’s “All the Bright Places” has finally arrived, and it is not holding back. This movie has it all: An affluent teenage introvert who’s desperately waiting for something interesting to happen to him, a mysterious blonde transfer student named Grace Town(!) whose pronounced limp suggests a tragic past, a wistful voiceover track laced with pearls of wisdom like “you are never more alive than when you’re a teenager,” a queer Black best friend character who spends the whole film making out with her girlfriend in the background, so much Beach House on the soundtrack that you can practically feel the sand between your toes (one of the…

Lili Reinhart pretending to properly walk with a cane and failing is honestly a brilliant allegory for the cinematic crisis of movies based on coming-of-age novels that use the same five beats to tell the exact same story over and over.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
My biggest issue with this film is the perspective. Instead of being about a girl dealing with suicidal thoughts after her boyfriend died, it’s about a boy DATING this girl and dealing with the heartbreak when she’s not ready for a relationship. Essentially replacing a story of depth and true turmoil with a story of youthful fleeting heartbreak.
The other thing is, everything about this film felt SO PHONY. 1. His friends have no depth, just worthless side characters 2. The mystery of the girl 3. The idea that being a teenager is the hardest thing in the world. 4. His sister giving him THE PERFECT heartbreak talk (doesn’t happen in real life). 5. The line that her last thoughts…
