Reading the stained glass of a 1920s Waco sanctuary
How to read the stained glass of a 1920s Waco sanctuary and what replaced the original art glass over time.

Walk into a Gothic Revival sanctuary in downtown Waco and the light reaches you before the pews do. The windows are not really there to let you look out; they colour what comes in, so that a room built of brick and timber is washed in blues, greens and deep reds that move with the sun. This guide reads the glass of a 1920s Waco sanctuary window by window, and follows what happened when some of that original glass was lost.
Start with the light itself, and the glass that makes it. According to the Wikipedia article on 1920s stained glass, the medium is glass coloured during manufacture by adding metallic salts, then cut into small pieces, arranged into patterns or pictures, and held in place by strips of lead called cames. Copper oxides produce green or bluish green, cobalt makes deep blue, and gold produces wine red and violet. Cullom H. Booth, resting on a raised basement with a prominent bell tower. The marker text states that the original art glass windows and the tracery detail in the sanctuary were replaced after a 1954 fire caused extensive damage. That single sentence is the hinge of the whole story: what you see today in that sanctuary is a later generation of glass standing in for what was installed in the 1920s. The marker does not describe the subjects of the original windows, so nobody can honestly tell you from that record which figures or scenes were depicted.
Reading the shapes before the pictures
Before you try to identify a scene, look at how the window is put together. Tracery is the stone or wood framework that divides a window into panels, and the Austin Avenue marker mentions tracery twice: the original tracery detail in the tower was removed by the 1940s, and the sanctuary tracery was replaced along with the glass after the fire. That is a reminder that the light you see is framed twice, once by the architect and once by the glazier. How colour was made in the glass itself
The Wikipedia article describes two main ways of getting colour into the pane. Pot metal glass is coloured all the way through, because the metallic oxides went into the pot while the glass was molten. Flashed glass fuses a thin layer of coloured glass onto a thicker body of clear or lightly tinted glass, which matters most for red: at architectural thickness, a rich red made in the mass transmits so little light that it looks black, so the colour is laminated thin instead. The historical marker for Austin Avenue Methodist Church tells you the dates, the architect and the fire, but it does not list the subjects of the original windows, the studio that made them, or the subjects of the replacements. If you are trying to reconstruct what stood in a particular opening before 1954, the marker is the wrong instrument. Congregational records, photographs and newspaper accounts from the period are the places to look, and those are questions for an archive rather than a walk past the building. Some windows also survive a rebranding: the Wikipedia article notes that many large windows have remained substantially intact since the Late Middle Ages, which is a useful reminder that glass is fragile but not always perishable.
How the glass frames an order of worship
Windows do their work on a schedule. Morning light rakes across the east end and lifts the blues; by afternoon the same panes go muted and the reds carry the room. What to look for on your next walk past
Stand outside first and find the tower. The Austin Avenue marker notes that the original tracery detail in the tower was removed by the 1940s, so what remains is a simplified silhouette rather than the 1925 version. Then step inside, if the building is open, and work backwards from what you can see: which panels are pot metal and which look flashed, where black paint draws a line and where silver stain warms a face, and whether the framework around the glass matches the age of the glass itself. Where the reading stops
The Wikipedia article explains technique and colour in depth, but it will not tell you who made the Waco windows, and the Texas Historical Commission marker will not tell you what the original glass depicted. Between those two records there is a gap, and the gap is the honest answer to the question of what a 1920s Waco sanctuary shows: the 1925 glass is gone from the sanctuary at 1300 Austin Avenue, replaced after a 1954 fire, and the replacement is what a visitor sees today. You can read the colour and the craft with confidence. You can read the subjects only if an archive turns up a photograph.
Walk past the tower at 1300 Austin Avenue and look up. The tracery is not the tracery of 1925, and the glass is not the glass of 1925, and both of those facts are legible from the street once you know to look for the joins.
